Nutrition and Health
Blog two: Radiant women eat well
Nutrition is the most wonderful tool when you understand it and the many ways it helps you to flourish and thrive. What you eat to a large degree determines your overall health and mental health. Nutrition is so entwined within us that if you could only grasp a small amount of what it does for us then you would make it a priority to serve your body with quality food.
I have been in the health and nutrition industry for 15 years now and the biggest frustration for me is the confusion and information overload that most people have surrounding their nutrition.
I spend a lot of time counselling clients out of unhealthy and unrealistic behaviours that have developed within their nutrition- from what they read on google to a crazy fad diet they started or from what someone told them in the gym.
Nutrition is not hard. But it’s made out to be and people make millions of dollars based on “the secret” they have to fat loss.
Fat loss is a by-product of being in a negative energy balance (calorie deficit) and that’s the easy part. But what makes nutrition incredible in my eyes is how it can have such a positive or negative affect on the body and mind.
The food we eat has the tools to create a body and mind that flourishes with vitality and health or a body that is sick with disease or sluggish, tired and depressed.
For many, when they think of food it is either “good or bad” and equals either weight loss or weight gain, however the truth is it is the overall energy balance of the foods we consume and the activity we do that determines weight loss or gain.
Over the years I have come to see that there are inherently no good or bad foods, just bad choices around how much we decide to consume. And there is no one particular style of diet that is better. In fact, the best style of nutrition is the one that you can follow long term and enjoy.
I truly believe that when one can see the greater benefits of eating to serve their health they will easily lose the excess body fat and then maintain that fat loss because their focus becomes about vitality and radiance not about what they weigh.
To me the inner and outer radiance that comes from giving my body the nutrition it deserves is a far greater asset than anything else.
I personally spent years chasing my tail to get to a place in which I was happy with my own nutrition. I have been guilty of restricting food groups, over eating and punishing myself with exercise, only eating “clean foods” and then hating my lack of restraint when it came to treats- oh, and not to mention “food anxiety” when eating out. So I do understand what a lot of you are going through.
For me, things became simple and weight management easy once I found a balanced mindset around food. I stopped seeing foods as either good or bad (weight loss or weight gain) and saw each individual food as being both “good and bad”.
As an example, chocolate tastes amazing and makes us feel good but eating too much can leave us feeling sluggish with potential weight gain.
Salads are full of nutrients and fibre which allows our body to thrive but eating only salad type meals can lead to an unbalanced mindset and drive potential bingeing.
There is good and bad in everything and it is about having balanced mindset when it comes to nutrition choices.
So, my wish for you is to not to feel anxious for the food choices you make but for you to gain the knowledge of how to balance your nutrition wisely and find peace within that. And understand that the food choices you make most of the time are either increasing your radiance or diminishing it long term.
